From a young age, my mom instilled the belief that I was just as capable and intelligent as my brothers and male peers. That if being knowledgeable threatens them, let them be threatened and don’t hold back because I am more than a pretty face. She also did not encourage gender “norms” by encouraging me to play male dominated sports and activities in addition to taking ballet and gymnastics.
She taught me that I was capable of determining my norm. Mom teases me now introducing me as her “very independent” daughter and I thank her for everything she did so that I could be that woman.
I want all females to have this support. There is nothing more important than having someone believe in you and encourage you to meet your goals, whatever they may be.
